About round
About round, the Roundhouse, Svolvær square, Lofoten, Norway, January 2003. Support by Vågan Council and North-Norwegian Artcenter.
A site-specific installation and meeting point in a small fishing village. During the darkest days of winter, when the sun does not rise for 1 month, I created a new function for this building that was soon to be destroyed. Moving and still images were projected on the windows, creating a small, turning shadow theatre from coloured lamps and filters. In one part with a social Thé room, I gave the inhabitants a new focus, maybe a kind of exotic dream, or just an eye to the sun. Since most of the visual material came from the desert in southern Egypt, an interesting dialogue started between the refugees/immigrants and the locals in Svolvær. The building was situated in the very centre, as a roundabout, where the daily life circulated.
